Hot-cavity studies for the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source

2016

International audience; The Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) has emerged as an important technique in many Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facilities for its reliability, and ability to ionize target elements efficiently and element selectively. GISELE is an off-line RILIS test bench to study the implementation of an on-line laser ion source at the GANIL separator facility. The aim of this project is to determine the best technical solution which combines high selectivity and ionization efficiency with small ion beam emittance and stable long term operation. The ion source geometry was tested in several configurations in order to find a solution with optimal ionization efficiency an…

Thin Film Characterisation Using MeV Ion Beams

2009

This chapter focuses on the characterisation of very thin films having thicknesses from a few nanometres to tens of nanometres. The driving force for the ion beam analysis community has mostly been the rapid development of microelectronics — all the elements in new thin SiO2 replacing dielectrics, diffusion barriers, and silicide contacts need to be analysed with a depth resolution even better than a nanometre. This together with new film deposition techniques like atomic layer deposition (ALD) [1] have given a push to the ion beam analysis community to develop new and better techniques using energetic (>0.5 MeV) ion beams.

Resonant Ionization Laser Ion Source for Radioactive Ion Beams

2009

A resonant ionization laser ion source based on all‐solid‐state, tunable Ti:Sapphire lasers is being developed for the production of pure radioactive ion beams. It consists of a hot‐cavity ion source and three pulsed Ti:Sapphire lasers operating at a 10 kHz pulse repetition rate. Spectroscopic studies are being conducted to develop ionization schemes that lead to ionizing an excited atom through an auto‐ionization or a Rydberg state for numerous elements of interest. Three‐photon resonant ionization of 12 elements has been recently demonstrated. The overall efficiency of the laser ion source measured for some of these elements ranges from 1 to 40%. The results indicate that Ti:Sapphire lase…

FTICR analysis of the magnetic trapping mode of the electron beam ion trap

1996

Abstract An electron beam ion trap is used to produce and confine highly-charged atomic ions in an energetic electron beam (electron trapping mode). After switching off the electron beam the ions remain trapped due to the external magnetic and electric fields. We have investigated the properties of this magnetic trapping mode by use of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. We found that the number of highly charged ions and the relative species abundance is nearly the same just before and just after turning off the electron beam. The electron trapping mode thus represents an ideal method for filling the trap in situ without the losses associated with transferring the …

Characterization of a cryogenic ion guide at IGISOL

2012

A small volume cryogenic ion guide has been characterized at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, as a prototype to verify whether there are any major obstacles to the use of high-density cryogenic helium gas for the stopping and extraction of high-energy ions from a large volume cryogenic ion catcher. The expected temperature scaling of the mass flow through the ion guide has been confirmed, showing that for the same helium density, the differential pumping requirements are less stringent for cryogenic operation. At 90 K a clear reduction in the mass-analyzed impurities is achieved, although lower temperatures are required to freeze out oxygen and nitrogen. This is supported by the reduction in…

Production of neutron deficient rare isotope beams at IGISOL; on-line and off-line studies

2004

This article reports on recent on-line yield measurements employing the light-ion and heavy-ion reaction-based ion guide systems and new results on a-recoil ion transport properties in ion guides with and without electric fields. In addition, the presently used ion guide designs for fusion evaporation reactions are introduced. The present study investigated different schemes for ion extraction from the gas cell. The addition of an extra ring electrode between the traditional skimmer electrode and the exit hole led to transmission independent of the primary beam intensity as opposed to strong intensity dependence observed earlier with the plain skimmer only. Furthermore, the mass resolving p…

Hydrogen influence on the structure and properties of amorphous hydrogenated carbon films deposited by direct ion beam

2008

Abstract The present work provides results for amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films grown by direct ion beam deposition method. Acetylene and its mixtures with hydrogen were used. The films were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, elastic recoil detection, Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometry, infrared spectroscopy, and microhardness measurements. These techniques indicated that an admixture of hydrogen yields a lower deposition rate, a higher content of total and bounded hydrogen in the a-C:H films, and a lower film density. The optical and mechanical properties depend on both, hydrogen concentrations in the gas phase and in the films, and show a strong diamond-like…

The identification of autoionizing states of atomic chromium for the resonance ionization laser ion source of the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility

2017

Abstract This paper presents the results of an investigation into autoionizing states of atomic chromium, in the service of the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS): the principal ion source of the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility based at CERN. The multi-step resonance photo-ionization process enables element selective ionization which, in combination with mass separation, allows isotope specific selectivity in the production of radioactive ion beams at ISOLDE. The element selective nature of the process requires a multi-step “ionization scheme” to be developed for each element. Using the method of in-source resonance ionization spectroscopy, an optimal three-step, three-reson…

Time Characteristics of the Ion Beam Cooler-Buncher at JYFL

2001

A beam cooler for low-energy ion beams was constructed to improve the ion optical properties of radioactive ion beams produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla. The beam cooler is a buffer gas filled RF-quadrupole. The delay properties and the possibility to accumulate a continuous IGISOL beam and release it in short bunches is discussed.
